BHP has selected ICE Engineering and Construction as their Electrical and Instrumentation constructor for the 2017 Smelter Campaign Maintenance work (SCM17).  This large and complex project provided approximately 350 jobs for our local South Australian based Supervisors, electricians, instrumentation technicians, commissioning techs and support staff.

The Smelter Campaign Maintenance (SCM17) was one of BHP’s largest ever planned shutdowns at their Olympic Dam Mine operation.  The investment by BHP was in excess of $350M.

The Project Scope included upgrades and refit of the;

• Existing electric & Flash furnaces.
• Anode and casting area, Including the installation of two new casting wheels & a new Control/MCC room.
• Acid plant.
• Electro static precipitator (ESP), which included the complete replacement (Lift in/Lift out) of the 500t ESP & new access platforms.
• Feed preparation building, including the installation of a new Larox filter press
• Five/Ten yearly detailed Inspections & upgrades to the MCC’s & substations within the smelter areas.

To deliver the work in the time allocated we had 13 work groups 7 working a day shift roster and 6 working night shift, all occurring with no LTI or MTI.

In addition to the 270,000-man hours of direct labour ICE also provided key support to BHP in the procurement, Engineering, Planning & commissioning phases of the shutdown.
